One of the rules of politics is that you don't pick a fight unless you intend to do whatever it takes to win that fight. If the Republicans choose to fight the Administration in regard to Eric Holder and Fast and Furious (and they should), they'd better be in it for the long haul and be willing to do whatever it takes to win. Otherwise, they'll look weak and would be better off not to have picked the fight in the first place.
