Every time, when it's come right down to it, whenever the Democrats have forced a showdown on the budget, Republicans have caved. They huff, and they puff, but then they give in. They make themselves look worse than if they'd just given in to begin with, because they look like a bunch of phonies.
This is why appeasement doesn't work. The one you appease always comes back for more. They'll only stop when Republicans prove things are different now. That'll be hard, but it's the only way anything will change.
